Care of Hand-Carved Candles

Your hand-carved candle is a modern version of a craft dating back to colonial candlemaking guilds. We make the candle core, which is then dipped in hot liquid wax. While the candle is still warm, we carve, twist and curl the wax using sculpting tools and knives to make a decorated candle. After carving, the warm candle is glazed, which strengthens and protects the candle surface. Because of the protective glaze, cleaning your candle is easy with a feather duster or soft cloth. Do not use water to clean the candle. Avoid placing your candle in direct sunlight. Keep candles from extremely high or low temperatures. Never leave a candle burning unattended. Avoid burning your candle in a draft. Keep wick trimmed to 1/4 in. Burn your candle for short periods of time.

Burning Instructions

Because we use water to cool the layers during the dipping process, it is possible some droplets may become trapped between layers. When first lighting the candle, you may want to pour off any melted wax which may have impurities (glaze, dyes, etc.) until the flame has reached the core. ALWAYS extinguish the flame before pouring.

Following these simple steps, you can create a "well" into which a tea light (without the metal cup) may be placed.

A. Light the wick. Burn for up to 15 minutes until the "well" is filled with liquid wax.

B. Extinguish the flame. Pour off the liquid wax and allow the candle to cool. Any wax drips can be removed after they become hard.

C. Repeat steps A & B until a "well" of no more than 2 in. is reached. As the "well" deepens, the light of the flame will glow through the "windows"! We recommend burning the wider topped candles because they refill easily and do not require as much attention. Candles with narrow tops must be watched carefully or some of the candle top may be damaged. If the outside edge begins to soften, extinguish the flame, pour off the liquid wax, and allow the candle to cool. Once the "well" is formed you are able to insert a refill. You now have a beautiful hand-crafted candle holder that should last indefinitely with proper care.

We do several other things that take extra time & extra expense to make our Candle the very best we can. You might find Cheaper Candles but you won’t find BETTER or NICER Candles!
